Irony

It has often been said that Hawthorne is the master of irony, effectively using it to expand the meaning of his literature. Choose two examples of irony from the novel and identify the type of irony used. (verbal, dramatic, situational) Discuss the significance of the irony and the meaning that this gives to the novel.

Symbolism

Hawthorne is the master of symbolism, creating symbols that evolve throughout the novel and take on deeper meaning. Expanding the symbol allows Hawthorne to create meaning for the reader. As we peer in on puritan society, we are introduced to the first symbol, a rosebush that stands just outside the prison door. This symbol is enhanced when Pearl states that "she was plucked off the rosebush. . ." What is the significance of extending this symbol for the reader? Use the text to support your response.
